This research position offers the opportunity to contribute to next-generation AI solutions for space-weather forecasting in support of NASA's Artemis Program [1][2]. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, data science, statistics, and space physics. Research activities include developing advanced machine learning algorithms, designing robust evaluation methodologies, and analyzing massive volumes of vision-based and scientific sensor data collected from space- and ground-based observatories. The project aims to obtain a better estimate of the costs of extreme space-weather events and find innovative ways to incorporate such costs into model training and evaluation, and thereby improving the accuracy, reliability, and operational usefulness of space weather forecasting systems, ultimately contributing to the preparedness and safety of astronauts and mission operations during extreme space weather events. Candidates will gain experience with state-of-the-art ML/DL frameworks, high-performance computing, and collaborative research with scientists from leading research institutions and NASA centers.
The admitted candidate will spend one or two summers at a NASA center, where they will work on this project under the direct supervision of NASA scientists who are responsible for ensuring that the radiation exposure received by astronauts remains below established safety limits.

The student will work full-time on improving an existing AI data pipeline that processes millions of images. Depending on the student's skills and interests, they may contribute either to the front-end of this pipeline or to one of the research products. For front-end tasks, the student is expected to have experience with modern front-end frameworks (e.g., Angular, React), and containerization concepts (e.g., Docker, images, and networks). For research projects, they are expected to have a strong foundation in statistics and mathematics, as well as proficiency in Python programming. The student will be exposed to ongoing research through participation in weekly, in-person lab meetings. In addition, they will receive guidance and mentorship through regular one-on-one meetings. The position will continue through the summer.
